Newport and My home

So, I forgot to post the pictures of my first day of work, my first shift, first time on the Oregon coast. I spent Sunday night with my boss, and Monday morning we went out to Yaquina Head to work my first predator watch. I worked next to a lighthouse! Seriously! Who gets to do stuff like this? Crazy. It went by so fast, and it was COLD..lol. I'm also including a video of the bunkhouse I'm staying at for the summer so you can see what my digs look like. I'm set up quite nice I might add.

So, I thought I'd tell you more about what I'm doing here. Each week we do 4 predator watches for 4 hours, and we have to cover every day light hour of a day. So, Monday, my predator watch will be 5 am-9am, and then Tuesday 9am-1pm, so on and so forth. Starting next week, I will also be doing 4 reproductive plots each week. These are done from 6am-9am everyday except Tuesday. Tuesdays I will be out at Gregory Point doing an 8 hour predator watch. Yeah, that means going to the bathroom in the woods. I hate that, but when you gotta go, you gotta go. Good thing they don't have ticks that carry lime disease here. Gregory Point is the place with the lighthouse and the bridge. You actually can't walk on that bridge, they plan to tear it down because its unsafe. The lighthouse hasn't been used in years, and they plan to close it up so it doesn't get damaged. Right now Gregory Point is owned by the Coast Guard, but they will be changing ownership back over to some Native American tribes this summer as it is historically their land. There's a Native American cemetery there. Wow.

Have I told you guys I'm like a full time coffee drinker now? It's weird. But, it's cold when you go out on your watches, and these early mornings, its just absolutely necessary. I would drink cider or hot cocoa, but I NEED the caffeine. Oh, and I discovered last night that I lost my wedding ring. :( I have NO idea where it is. I've turned my car and room inside out. Here's hoping it turns up. I'm so mad about it too, because I ALWAYS know where my ring is. The only time I take it off is when I go to bed at night. Argh...so much going on, I can't even remember the last time I remember seeing it. I think I lost it to the ocean when we were tide pooling. Okay, enough of me whining.  **Update: I looked through my pictures from Tuesday, and I still had my ring on my finger after tide pooling, so I didn't lose it to the ocean. Still don't know where though.

My boss has officially trained me, and left me to run the south coast on my own. Here goes nothing...lol

This is the rock we observed my first day. Look at all of those birds! Crazy sauce!
The lighthouse I stood beside while working...again...crazy sauce! This was the first lighthouse I have ever been to, or at least remember going to.

The view from my scope of one of my rocks I observe. Those are the murres standing shoulder to shoulder. They nest THAT close to one another. Crazy, but safety in numbers!

Well I tried to upload some videos for you, but for some reason that Blogger won't explain to me, it won't upload. I will just have to try another time. Enjoy!

  2. Going in the woods is the pits! Im so sorry to hear about your ring, I hope you find it. The pics are amazing. You need to turn them into a keepsake coffee table book at the end of all this. (then you can drink your coffee and look at pics!) You are awsome!
